Everts Air Cargo; Fairbanks, Alaska — Michael Heit

GAT-1 trainer with a bit of dust prepares for its restoration.

Mike and the guys at Everts Air Cargo in Fairbanks, Alaska are restoring a GAT-1 trainer.  The GAT-1 (General Aviation Trainer) trainers followed the Blue Boxes in the early 1960s.  They featured transistorized circuitry and improved instrumentation and training capabilities.

Unboxing the GAT-1.

After unpacking the simulation crates, they are ready to start with fiberglass repair of the dings the sim has accumulated over the years, and paint it back to its original colors.  The fuselage and interior are in amazing condition and the last recorded flight was in 1981. The years of humidity, subzero temps and time have taken a toll on the electronics but Mike is certain it can be restored. He restores old radios and such; he is anxious to dive in.
